Competency Based Interview Questions

Competency based questions are becoming more widely used as a way of screening and interviewing candidates. They aim of them is to assess skills and abilities rather than focusing solely on the experience on a candidates CV and producing empty answers. A candidate that aces a competency based interview will show that they have capabilities for the job and often employers will invest in training for these individuals. Understanding how to answer these questions may come easier to a graduate because they follow a similar pattern to an undergraduate essay question.  Use strong argument and logic and present your answers in an articulate manner. It helps some people to respond to the questions by remembering a system to structure their answer. Examples are the CAR and STAR system:
Context
Action
Result

Or

Situation
Task
Action
Result

Typical questions will ask you to describe a situation from your personal experience. They may not even relate to work. Skills in logic and argument will give you an addition edge.

Relevancy is the first key point to consider – again think if you were structuring a written argument you would leave out anything that wasn’t relevant to your argument unless it was essential for context; the same applies here. Also consider ambiguity and presumption as elements that may weaken your answer. It is worth drafting answers to some common competency based questions so that you can go over them before you interview.  An example of a question might be something like:

Tell me about a time that you achieved something impossible by making it possible, how did you go about it and how did you feel afterwards?

There are three key parts to the question highlighted in bold. This gives you the structure to the answer. If you need time to think ask the interviewer for a moment; they appreciate that you are on the spot. Set the scene by describing the seemingly impossible task, then go on to explain how you went about making it possible and how you felt when you achieved this feat. The question assessing your ability to overcome barriers, how you handle them, if you can think laterally and ultimately how you respond to your own achievements. The key skills are resourcefulness and creativity in relation to challenges. The interviewer will get a better sense of your character by asking these types of questions.

You may be asked a negative question such as:

Tell me about a time you failed to meet a deadline?

In that case keep the language as positive as possible. This is not an open invitation to make excuses for poor performance. Again set the scene and explain why the missing of the deadline was necessary and a benefit in that instance. For instance during a project something that would add value to it may have come to light in the later stages, delaying the completion but providing advantages that outweighed the detriment of late delivery.

Considering a Graduate Career in Media Sales?

We’ve put this article together to give a little extra guidance to graduates considering a career in media sales. The media industry is an exciting, fast paced, ever changing and ubiquitous sector. As career media sales can be extremely rewarding, however we understand that many graduates considering this as a path may not have a full perspective on the industry; being entry level professionals. A graduate with any degree will be considered if they have the correct disposition for this role. Essential to success within media sales is having exceptional communication skills; the ability to articulate, listen and be persuasive.

Places of work – Commercial television and radio stations, national and local newspapers, magazines and periodicals, publishing houses, business information companies and outdoor media companies, ambient media and digital media companies.

Initial duties – Business development: selling advertising space through b2b sales calls, advising potential clients on advertising costs and building a portfolio of clients. Principally you will be persuading a potential client that you can provide them with an advertising solution through the correct medium, in order to connect them with their target audience. Lead sourcing is also an underlying part of this role, constantly creating a list of potential clients through research and networking. The role eventually moves more towards account management; looking after your existing clients, whist maintaining good business development practises.

Development – More experienced duties include on-site client visits, a heavier focus on revenue and new business and the opportunity to become involved in new feature ideas for advertising space.

The hours for this role can be long initially, requiring a lot of dedicated office time to kick start a presence in the sector. There are also often targets to work to that will be supervised; however the environment from one sales floor to another will vary depending upon the specific company. Some offer a boiler room environment which is in stark contrast to a more consultative approach. A career in media sales however can be extremely rewarding, offering the opportunity for fast promotion and excellent bonuses.

If you are interested in a career within media sales, speaking to an experienced recruitment consultant can help guide you. Making sure that the companies you are potential interested in are the best fit for your personality as regards their sales environment is paramount – as mentioned this can vary massively. Graduates may be put off by interviewing within companies that are too fast paced or not fast paced enough.

Will Independence Threaten The Scottish Conferencing Sector?

Back in 2010 Glasgow hit an all-time high of £130m within the business conference sector, making the city one of the top European destinations for conferencing. Last year marketing bosses from the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) predicted a bumper year in 2012 for conference sales, having already beaten the £120m total revenue from 2011 in the first eight months of the financial year.
“Between April and November, GCMB confirmed 347 new international and UK conventions through to 2020.”

“Major conferences booked by GCMB this year include the European Association of International Education in 2015, the Congress of the International Society of Haematology in 2016 and the World Biomaterials Congress in 2020.”

Such glowing forecasts of 60% growth were a result of Glasgow thrashing the competition both nationally and internationally.

Labour leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau Gordon Matheson was immensely proud of their achievements.

"To have exceeded our total sales for last year with a quarter of the financial year remaining and at a time when competition in the global marketplace is incredibly fierce, is a clear endorsement of the confidence that the meetings industry continues to have in Glasgow.

"It further strengthens the city's reputation as one of the world's premier business tourism destinations."
Director of sales at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), Ben Goedegebuure had further endorsements, "Glasgow is continuing its emergence as one of Europe's key meetings and events destinations, and this is reflected in our growing success in this market.

"Meetings and events matter to Glasgow - they ignite our local economy, create repeat visitors to our city and underline Glasgow's role as a hub of information sharing, specialist knowledge and expertise, and business excellence."

However going forward into 2013 there has been a worrying decline in business visitors, and it has been suggested that this is a direct link to the Scottish independence referendum scheduled for 2014. Marketing bodies in the north of England have been accused of attempting to sabotage the Glasgow business marking by telling potential delegates that Scotland may soon be a foreign country. Many UK wide organisations are obliged to hold an annual conference within in the UK or Ireland leading the GCMB to rethink mechanisms that will allow Scotland to be added to the list. How many bodies will be willing to make these changes is also uncertain. The UK Liberal Democrats are an example of a conference Glasgow would be likely to lose as a result of independence.

Gordon Matheson has been strongly against independence because of the effects that uncertainty may have on the local economy.

"One of my greatest concerns is the potential collapse of our business tourism sector.
"This is worth hundreds of millions of pounds to Glasgow and the majority of this business comes form the rest of the UK."

Not everyone is concerned that the referendum will have a detrimental effect on the conferencing sector ib#n Glasgow as many concerns are in stark contrast to record bookings. SNP opposition leader Graeme Hendry shrugged the GCMB findings off as a technical issue.

"No-one in the industry expects this to be a significant issue. Glasgow has reccord bookings for the coming year which is hardly a sign of there being a problem."
It cannot be ignored however that Scotland will have to reapply for EU membership. This will throw up all kinds of timescale and visa issues, and uncertainty in its wake. Whether or not marketers from outside Scotland will use this as angle remains to be seen.
